Three articles landed in 24 hours this week — Business Insider, TechCrunch, The Atlantic — all arriving at the same conclusion: AI productivity gains are creating a burnout crisis.

Not one offered a solution.

A software engineer shipped more code than any quarter in his career. Felt less than ever. "Code reviews became rubber stamps. Design decisions became 'whatever AI suggests.'"

Berkeley researchers watched a 200-person company embrace AI. Nobody was told to do more. People just did more. Then expectations recalibrated around the new output.

The ratchet tightened. No mechanism to loosen it.

Everyone's debating whether AI will take people's jobs. The more urgent crisis is what's happening to the people who keep them.

Nobody got fired. They got hollowed out.

Every reskilling proposal assumes the person has cognitive resources to learn. Those are exactly the resources chronic depletion destroys first.

Before we can reskill the workforce, we have to restabilize the workforce.
